Twin Rivers YMCA Collects Items to Support Western NC

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Twin Rivers YMCA members and the local community rallied together to collect over 4,000 essential items to aid in the relief efforts for Western North Carolina. This effort was part of a larger initiative organized by the North Carolina Alliance of YMCAs, showcasing the Y’s commitment to standing by its neighbors during their most challenging times.

The donated items, including baby food, diapers, cleaning products, bottled water, personal hygiene items, and non-perishable goods, are being transported to Asheville, NC. The YMCA of Western North Carolina will distribute these supplies across its 12 branch locations to ensure that affected communities receive the support they need.

"Our hearts are with the families who are facing so much loss right now," said Kelly Millington, Interim-CEO at the Eastern Carolina YMCA. "What we're doing here isn’t just about sending supplies; it's about sending hope. It's about showing that no matter how hard things get, people care. Our YMCA family is proud to be there for those who need it most."

YMCAs across Western North Carolina are working tirelessly to support their communities by:

· Opening emergency shelters for displaced families

· Housing volunteer rescue workers

· Distributing essential items like food, water, and toiletries

· Providing charging stations and showers to those without power

· Delivering aid to homes cut off by damage

· Partnering with local organizations to provide coordinated relief efforts

"This is what the Y is all about—community," added Millington. "We are here to lift each other up, and we are incredibly grateful to every person who donated, packed, and helped organize this effort. The kindness we’ve seen is nothing short of inspiring."
