Local Racial Conciliation Coalition presents Film Screening on Percy Berry
Sunday, April 12 th at 2 pm
30 Park Ln O, Havelock, NC 28532
The Forward Together Coalition is proud to present a film screening on the lynching of Craven County native, Percy Berry on Sunday, April 12th at 2 pm, at New Beginnings Ministry of Faith, located at 30 Park Ln O, Havelock, NC. The coalition will present a 10-minute film created by local filmmaker Francine Robinson, followed by a panel of discussion featuring coalition members, including a descendant of Percy Berry. This event is free and open to the public.
On April 14th, 1932, Percy Berry, a Black resident of Havelock, NC, was fishing in Hancock Creek with a friend, when they were approached by five white men impersonating police officers. The men demanded $20 for a “fishing license,” and beat Berry when he refused to pay. Berry attempted to escape, followed by gunshots, and drowned in Hancock Creek, where his body was found a week later.
The Forward Together Coalition was formed in 2019 by local organizations, nonprofits, and community members to take part in the Equal Justice Initiatives' Community Remembrances Projects, to document, recognize, and honor victims of racial terror in Craven County. The coalition has since held various meetings and three Remembrance events in honor of two known Craven County victims of racial violence, Percy Berry and John Moore.
