Mardi Gras Takes Over Downtown

11 Years of Letting the Good Times Roll: New Bern Mardi Gras Takes Over Downtown February 14

New Bern, N.C. — Beads will fly, brass will blare, and downtown streets will dance as New Bern Mardi Gras returns on Saturday, February 14, bringing high-energy fun, live music, and Big Easy flair to the heart of the city.

What began more than a decade ago in New Bern’s Ghent neighborhood has grown into one of the city’s most anticipated annual celebrations. As the event continued to grow, the Ghent neighborhood Mardi Gras committee approached Swiss Bear with the idea of moving the festivities into downtown—allowing more space, greater accessibility, and the opportunity to involve local businesses and the broader community.

“The Ghent neighborhood created something really special, and we were honored when they asked Swiss Bear to help bring Mardi Gras downtown,” said Karen Sullivan, Executive Director of Swiss Bear. “This event has grown while staying true to its roots—community-driven, joyful, and full of personality.”

The celebration kicks off with the New Bern Mardi Gras Parade at 10:30 a.m., setting the tone for a full day of festivities. The parade begins on the 900 block of Pollock Street, travels to Middle Street, and ends at S. Front Street. Parade-goers can expect colorful floats, lively krewes, costumed revelers, plenty of beads—and a special appearance by the Paperhand Puppet Project, bringing their signature larger-than-life puppets and whimsical energy to the parade. The Second Line will be led by the No Quarter Brass Band, when parade viewers become part of the parade, following the fun to the block party.

Throughout the day, guests can enjoy live music by No Quarter Brass Band and Los Sabrosos del Son, along with art and craft vendors, food trucks, and interactive activities for all ages. Families and creatives alike are invited to take part in Mardi Gras mask-making with Bank of the Arts, adding a hands-on artistic element to the celebration.

“Starting the day with the parade brings instant energy downtown,” Sullivan added. “With music, art, food, and activities throughout the day, there’s truly something for everyone.”

Downtown restaurants, shops, and bars will join in with Mardi Gras–themed décor, specials, and activities, transforming the district into one big party. Guests of all ages are encouraged to dress up, bring friends and family, and soak in the festive atmosphere.

Now in its 11th year, New Bern Mardi Gras continues to honor its neighborhood beginnings while embracing its role as a signature downtown event—one that brings the entire community together to celebrate music, culture, and connection.
