'New Bern Follies' Honors The Athens Theatre's 113th Year in Downtown New Bern

The Athens Theatre located at 414 Pollock Street opened on April 11, 1911 - 113 years ago today. The theatre has been a notable structure in New Bern's downtown for many decades under numerous names and numerous façade appearances. New Bern Civic Theatre has been fortunate to call this charming and historic structure home since 1980. The theatre was originally built for Vaudeville/variety shows and silent movies. To honor its origins 'New Bern Follies,' a modern variety show, will happen on April 20 at 7:30PM. This show with a cast of locals from the community will revive the spirit of Vaudeville featuring: String band, mountain and popular music; stand up comedy; dance numbers; clowning; comic opera; aerialists and more. It's a bit like 'America's Got Talent' without the judges bringing good old fashioned fun to center stage appropriate for all ages. It will make for a perfect Arts in April weekend evening event. Also of note, before the 'Follies' begins at 7:30PM, the 400 block of Pollock Street will be closed to traffic for Family Fun Day and KidZone activities on the 400 block of Pollock Street between 2:00PM-6:30PM. All are welcome to join the celebration. Consider enjoying dinner between the day's events at one of downtown's many great restaurants and return to The Athens for the show.
Family Fun Day activities are free but the 'New Bern Follies' does require tickets, available now at: newberncivictheatre.org.
