Get ready to laugh your coconuts off as New Bern Civic Theatre (NBCT) proudly presents Monty Python’s Spamalot, the outrageously funny musical comedy lovingly ripped off from the classic film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Tony Award-winning musical clip-clops onto the NBCT stage for three weekends: November 7–9, 14–16, and 21–22.
Directed by Keith Boyd, Spamalot retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their ridiculous quest for the Holy Grail. Along the way, they encounter a chorus line of knights, divas, cows, killer rabbits, and yes—even the dreaded Knights Who Say “Ni!”
“This show is heavily inspired by Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Eric Idle’s love of music and collecting royalties,” said Keith Boyd, director of Spamalot. “This cast and crew is thrilled to be performing these legendary comedy scenes and songs and adding to Eric’s bank account.”
Boyd adds, “This is, of course, a very silly show and this cast and crew has taken the art of silliness very seriously. Not since NBCT produced Spamalot in 2014 has a group of people been so dedicated to holding goofiness to the highest degree.”
But even with all the absurdity, Spamalot carries a touch of heart. “You don’t need to be a Monty Python fanatic to enjoy this show,” said Boyd. “This show is for every person who enjoys a good laugh. Sometimes, we all just need to be reminded to ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’—and this show does just that. Twice, including the reprise!”
This production features a stellar cast of familiar faces and newcomers to NBCT alike. George Oliver stars as the valiant (if not always able to count to three) King Arthur, joined by Andrew Moebius as the timid Sir Robin, Craig Ramey as the wise Sir Bedevere, Wesley Gerard as the dashing Sir Galahad, and Austin Arrington as the fun, but bloodthirsty Sir Lancelot. Matt Shauer brings reason as Arthur’s faithful sidekick who can count to three, Patsy, with Shalia Fuentes-Matthews taking on the role of the glamorous and commanding Lady of the Lake — backed by an ensemble whose harmonies might just shatter glass.
Rounding out the cast are a host of talented performers in multiple roles, bringing to life everything from dancing knights to taunting Frenchmen, flying cows, and one very determined rabbit. Together, this cast and crew deliver a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud adventure that’s as musically impressive as it is delightfully absurd.
Spamalot is produced by Meredith Laskovics with music direction by Sandie Waters, choreography by Sophia O’Yenik, assistant directed by Regina Ruisi, and stage management by Cliff Nielsen.
Spamalot is packed with unforgettable songs, including “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” “The Song That Goes Like This,” and “You Won’t Succeed on Broadway.” Audiences can expect a riotous blend of satire, showbiz sparkle, and full-throttle absurdity that’s pure Monty Python magic.
