Steven and Kyung Cavallo have been collaborating in art spanning four decades. Steven Cavallo was born in New Jersey in 1956 and went on to study art at New York’s School of Visual Arts, class of 1979. He became an illustrator working for publications including The Wall Street Journal, March of Dimes, Scholastic and Dell Publishing. Kyung Cavallo was born in Chun Cheon, South Korea studying creative writing and had poems, essays and short stories included in several publications both in Korea and the United States. In the 1990s, Steven began painting in watercolor and Kyung began to collaborate with Steven on art installations using burlap, thorns, and burnt paper to be used in their work, with strong themes on human rights.
The Distance Between Memories to Nostalgia is a collection of paintings created over the past 15 years. They are images of fragmented memories depicting two travelers on the road from America’s Eastern Seaboard to the western deserts and to South Korea, telling a series of stories and recollections both comforting and haunting. Many of the paintings merge reality and memory with dreams often on the verge of fading into obscurity, and as in memory, they become one, blurring the lines between fact and imagination. These paintings are the memories and nostalgic recollections of family, friends and acquaintances, of hellos and goodbyes and echoes that linger on over the span of a lifetime.
