Home for the Holidays: Grab a Friend and Discover New Bern’s Nonprofits This Giving Tuesday

The New Bern Chamber of Commerce and our Non-Profit Council, New Bern Giv3 invite the public to an evening of connection, generosity, and community spirit at the New Bern Farmers Market on December 1 with local nonprofits.

NEW BERN, N.C. — What if your next favorite local nonprofit is one you haven’t met yet? Home for the Holidays: A Giving Tuesday Celebration is a community gathering organized in partnership with the New Bern Chamber of Commerce and local nonprofit organizations to celebrate generosity, increase awareness of local causes, and connect residents with opportunities to give back.

The event will take place Tuesday, December 1, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the New Bern Farmers Market and brings together local nonprofits and community members for an evening dedicated to discovering organizations doing meaningful work, celebrating familiar favorites, and finding new ways to give back. All members of the public are welcome.

Whether you already support a favorite nonprofit, recently moved to New Bern, or are simply looking for a way to get more involved in the community, this is an opportunity to meet the people behind the causes, learn about their work, and discover where your time, talents, or treasures can make a difference.

“Giving Tuesday is about more than fundraising. It’s about bringing people together around the causes that make our community stronger,” said Matt McCotter, chair of the New Bern Giv3 Committee. “We want people to stop by after work, bring friends, someone who has just moved here, to feel welcomed, whether they’re looking for an organization to support, curious about volunteering, or looking to learn just how much our area makes an impact. There’s a place for everyone in the spirit of giving.”

A Small Town with a Big Giving Spirit
GivingTuesday is a global movement that encourages people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. New Bern has embraced that spirit in a distinctly local way, bringing together dozens of nonprofit organizations working to make a difference throughout the community.

In a previous year, the national GivingTuesday team was so impressed by New Bern’s collective impact that it featured local coverage on the movement’s official website, recognizing the remarkable spirit of generosity found in this small town.

That spirit continues through the work of local nonprofits addressing needs across the community, from supporting families and mentoring young people to protecting animals, strengthening the arts, and caring for the environment.

Last year, more than 50 nonprofits participated in New Bern’s Giving Tuesday celebration. The gathering created opportunities for organizations to build relationships, share their missions, and connect with people who might never have otherwise discovered their work.

Find Your Place in the Community
For nonprofits, the celebration offers a chance to introduce their missions, connect with potential volunteers and supporters, and build partnerships with fellow organizations. For community members, it’s an opportunity to explore the many ways to get involved in New Bern.

As longtime community advocate Thearsa Lee reminds us, giving comes in many forms: your time, your talent, or your treasures. Whether that means volunteering an afternoon, sharing a professional skill, making a gift, or helping spread the word about a cause, every contribution can make a difference.

Stop by on your way home from work and bring a coworker, bring a friend and meet the organizations helping make New Bern a wonderful place to live. Already involved with a nonprofit? Come celebrate its work and discover other causes. Looking for a meaningful way to give back during the holiday season? Start here.
