Firefighters Respond to Early Morning Fire in Taberna

At approximately 2:35am today, New Bern Fire-Rescue responded to 204 Baden Court for a reported structure fire. Units arrived in about five minutes to find heavy fire and thick smoke showing from a two-story home. Volunteers from stations 31 and 21 also responded to the scene, as well as New Bern police and utility crews.

The fire started on the first floor of the home and quickly spread to the second floor and attic. Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control by approximately 4:30am and extinguished the flames about an hour later.

All occupants were able to make it out of the home safely, but the home suffered significant fire, water, and structural damage. There were no injuries to staff during this emergency response. In all, approximately 41 city and volunteer fire personnel responded to this incident.

New Bern Fire-Rescue Chief Damien Locklear credits working smoke detectors for alerting the homeowner and saving lives. “New Bern Fire-Rescue previously visited this address to assist the homeowner with installing smoke detectors and replacing the batteries in others. This proactive measure alerted the homeowner in the middle of the night and helped everyone escape the fire safely.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
