Craven CC, SECU to Teach Students 'Reality of Money' on International Credit Union Day this Thursday

NEW BERN - Craven Community College (Craven CC), in conjunction with North Carolina State Employees' Credit Union (SECU), will celebrate International Credit Union (ICU) Day® with an event that teaches teens and young adults about the "Reality of Money®." The event will be held on the New Bern campus for Craven County students this Thursday, Oct. 17.

This engaging simulation offers students a unique opportunity to navigate the complexities of financial responsibilities, including jobs, debt, and family life. Participants will embark on an interactive journey through various expense stations, where SECU and Craven CC volunteers will guide them in making essential financial decisions to help them reach their next payday. This hands-on experience is designed to equip students with practical skills that will prepare them for a successful financial future.

"Reality of Money" fosters collaboration between Craven County Schools, SECU, parents, and community volunteers, emphasizing the importance of financial literacy among youth. Through this activity, students will learn valuable lessons about:

1.  The Importance of Good Credit: Understanding how credit impacts financial opportunities.

2.  The Advantage of Further Education: Recognizing the long-term benefits of pursuing education beyond high school.

3.  Smart Financial Decisions: Emphasizing the significance of making informed choices to establish a solid financial foundation for their future.

Three separate sessions will be held throughout the day to maximize opportunities for students in Craven County Schools and home school students. Sessions are as follows:

·     9:30-11 a.m.: High School Students

·     11:10-12:40 p.m.: Middle School Students

·     1:15-2:45 p.m.: College Students

"The 'Reality of Money' program was developed to help empower the next generation with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive financially," said Erin Roache, SECU Sr. Financial Education Specialist. "The event promises to be both informative and fun, and we look forward to engaging with students for this important initiative."

According to the World Council of Credit Unions, International Credit Union (ICU) Day® celebrates the spirit of the global credit union movement. The day is recognized to reflect upon the credit union movement's history, promote its achievements, recognize hard work, and share member experiences. ICU Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948.
