NEW BERN, NC: The New Bern Historical Society is very pleased to announce the appointment of Angela Franks as Executive Director, effective November 2026. Franks comes to the Historical Society after 32 years as an educator with two decades as an administrator. A New Bernian since early childhood, she brings a deep understanding of this community’s history, culture, and people to the job.
Angela will guide the organization not only through well-known events such as Ghostwalk, Lantern Tour and Heritage Homes Tour, but will also help manage the collection bursting into digital sharing as well as an historic battlefield. “I am excited about the opportunity to serve an organization that preserves and celebrates the history I have cherished my entire life personally and professionally.”
“As we turn to the next chapter, we are thrilled to welcome Angela knowing she will elevate the Society’s mission, reputation, and partnerships in the community. I am extremely grateful for our loyal and generous members, volunteers, sponsors, Board of Directors, and staff who delivered enthusiasm and passion event after event. You talented folks are the lifeblood of the Society and truly bring history to life.” stated Anthony Giardino, current Executive Director.
“We are very sorry to see Anthony go. He has been a strong asset to the Society and to the community and he leaves the Historical Society much stronger than when he started,” as stated by both Joe Hunt, Board President, and Kathy Morrison, Board First Vice President. “Anthony
has evidenced a strong love for the community and its history, has led with character and integrity, and has been a stalwart in the foundational development of procedural protocol, while never losing sight of the Society’s mission of celebrating and sharing the history of New Bern
through events and education,” said Bob Penvose, Board Treasurer.
Giardino has led the Historical Society into a much more visible role in the community, teaching courses for both school children and community organizations. He was key in the establishment of the 100th Anniversary Exhibit at the DoubleTree Hotel, that is free for all to enjoy.
The mission of the New Bern Historical Society is to celebrate and share the history of New Bern and the area through events and education. Offices are located in the historic Attmore- Oliver House at 511 Broad Street in New Bern. For more information, call 252-638-8558 or go www.NewBernHistorical.org or www.facebook.com/
