What was it like in 1862? NEW BERN, NC, Have you ever wondered what life was like in your great-grandfather’s time? Here is an opportunity to find out. Join us as uniformed re-enactors from the 5th and 7th NC Infantry Regiments will set up a full period camp at New Bern Battlefield Park Saturday, September 5th. The Harlowe Patriots: Fourteen Free Men of Color Who Fought in the Revolutionary War
NEW BERN, NC, It's a little known but important piece of American history: black soldiers fighting against the British in the Revolutionary War. It's estimated that 5,000 black soldiers served on the Patriot side during the Revolution, which lasted from 1775 to 1783.Fourteen free men of color from the Harlowe community of Havelock fought in key battles of the war, with General George Washington leading the fight for independence.
