(NEW BERN, NC) February 12, 2026 - Celebrate Black History Month with Tryon Palace on Feb. 19, at 6 p.m., at the North Carolina History Center with "Stories that Still Sing: Lyrics, the pathway to freedom," a powerful and engaging performance by Mary D. Williams. Tryon Palace is a part of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR).
Mary D. Williams is a gospel singer, civil rights historian, former adjunct professor at Duke University, and author of five books. Ms. Williams brings history to life through storytelling, music, and dramatic interpretation.
All of Ms. Williams presentations begin with a song. She says that “music is a part of every era of our lives and can be heard when speech cannot.” Her voice is dynamic and powerful, and she encourages the audience to join in. Her talent for storytelling through music and her gorgeous voice have earned her recognition across the world.
During "Stories that Still Sing," Ms. Williams will illuminate on the lived experiences, voices, and cultural legacies of African American history in a way that is both educational and deeply moving. Her knowledge of music and the culture from which it emerged is based on scholarly work. As she performs African American spirituals deeply rooted in the traditions of the South, she will share context and speak to the struggles still faced today – connecting generations of music and social change.
At the conclusion of this performance, Ms. Williams will highlight her upcoming book “Mahalia Jackson, Moving On Up a Little Higher,” a biography on acclaimed gospel singer and civil rights pioneer, Mahalia Jackson.

The evening begins with a light reception at 6 p.m., followed by Ms. Williams’ performance at 7 p.m. at the North Carolina History Center, located at 529 S. Front Street, New Bern.
