CarolinaEast Medical Center Nationally Recognized with an ‘A’ Rating for the Spring 2024 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

CarolinaEast Medical Center was awarded an ‘A’ in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2024 Hospital Safety Grade. The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit watchdog that sets standards for excellence in patient care. Safety Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring. CarolinaEast previously received an ‘A’ in Fall 2023.

Leapfrog assigns an ‘A,’ ‘B,’ ‘C,’ ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

“The consistent and focused efforts of CarolinaEast’s team allow the public to know the high quality and safe care provided here. Receiving another ‘A’ rating from Leapfrog confirms CarolinaEast’s success in keeping safety at the forefront for excellence in everything we do,” said Michael Smith, President and CEO, CarolinaEast Health System. “The recognition of this score is truly not for us but rather for the hundreds of thousands of patients we are privileged to serve each year.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused exclusively on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.

“Everyone who works for CarolinaEast Health System should be proud of this ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It

takes complete dedication of at every level, and an ironclad commitment to putting patients first. I thank CarolinaEast, its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for caring so deeply for its patients and their safety.” Additionally, North Carolina is ranked #8 in the state rankings.
