ROTARY CLUB ENJOYS A DAY WITH THE DOGS

On Saturday, November 8, members of the New Bern Breakfast Rotary Club, Rotaractors from Craven Community College, along with friends and family, visited the Colonial Capital Humane Society at 1860 Old Airport Road.

The morning began with a tour of the CCHS facility, and an overview of the programs and services offered by the only No Kill shelter in Craven County. But what everyone really came for was the chance to walk some of the dogs who were excited to have someone take them to Creekside Park across the street.

Gretchen Derda, Community Services Chair for the Breakfast Rotary, was delighted with the turnout for this first-time event. “It was a very interesting and informative tour, followed by a beautiful day in the Park for our group of 22 volunteers to walk some of the dogs at the shelter. I honestly think our walkers had more fun than the dogs, although the dogs did seem happy to be out for a while,” she said.

The Colonial Capital Humane Society Facebook page shared a photo of the visiting group with the following note, “Huge thank you to all of the volunteers from the New Bern Breakfast Rotary that visited the shelter today! We appreciate all of the wonderful donations and for you taking the time to walk so many of our dogs!”

This year, the New Bern Breakfast Rotary Club has scheduled at least one monthly community service project in addition to the long-standing commitment for preparing and serving lunch at the RCS Community Kitchen on the first Friday of each month. The next member opportunity to exhibit “Service Above Self” will be helping the CarolinaEast Foundation on December 5th with their annual Breakfast with Santa event.

The New Bern Breakfast Rotary club meets every Thursday morning, from 7:30 to 8:30 am, with evening meetings on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays each month from 5:30to 6:30 pm. Both meetings are held at the Ghent Event Center, 1918 MLK Jr. Blvd. in New Bern. Information is available at their website, www.NewBernRotary.org.
