SUMMARY:Ribbon Cutting to Celebrate the Renaming for Craven Literacy Council
DESCRIPTION:We cordially invite you to attend a Ribbon Cutting to celebrate the Renaming of Craven Literacy Council!\n\n\n\nRefreshments will be served! \n\n\n\nOur Story\n\nCraven Literacy Council is a nationally accredited volunteer-based provider of adult literacy instruction. Since 1986\, CLC has been changing lives of families in Craven\, Jones\, and Pamlico counties by providing adults with a place to establish and enhance basic reading\, writing\, math\, and technology skills. CLC delivers instruction through one-on-one tutoring and small group classes. Our programs offer flexible scheduling and individualized learning plans tailored to the goals of each learner.\n\nCLC has over 125 specially trained volunteer tutors certified by ProLiteracy\, many other volunteers\, and over 200 students. Most of our students are actively employed in our local labor market and are learning to be even more productive individuals\, workers\, parents\, and citizens.\n\nOur Mission\n\nBuilding literacy skills to empower adults and families to improve lives.\n\nOur Vision\n\nThe cycle of low literacy will be stopped and individuals will have the skills to achieve their full potential.\n\nWhat Craven Literacy Council Does\n\n	Provides free one-on-one and small group literacy instruction\;\n	Creates individualized curriculum based on each student's abilities and goals\;\n	Provides continuing education to tutors and students through mentoring\, training\, and computer labs\; and\n	Increases public awareness of literacy through community events.\n\nWhy Literacy Matters\n\nWhen individuals the world over learn how to read\, write\, do basic math\, and use computers\, they are more likely to lift themselves out of poverty\, contribute to lower health care costs\, and find and keep sustainable employment. Educated mothers have been shown to be more likely to send their children to school. It has been widely reported that a mother's level of reading skill is the greatest determinant of her child's academic success. \n\nIf you or someone you know wants to work to improve their literacy skills for any reason\, we look forward to hearing from you.
